Buying a used car from further away: a practical guide

Nationwide Motor Co buying guides · Reviewed 24 September 2026

A long-distance car purchase should begin with a clear picture of the actual vehicle, the documents available and the purchase arrangements. Do not book travel or pay a deposit only because an advert looks promising. Confirm availability first and turn your important questions into written answers.

Shortlist the vehicle, not just the model

Save the advert and note the stock reference, mileage, cash price and key equipment. Check whether the photographs show the actual car and look through the interior as carefully as the exterior. Model names and trim badges are not a reliable substitute for confirming optional equipment, seating, charging cables or the number of keys.

Send a concise list of essentials. If a particular camera, seat function, boot measurement or phone connection is critical, ask the team to confirm it. If there is an area you cannot see clearly, request an additional photograph or a walk-around if available. Do not assume every dealer provides the same remote-viewing service or turnaround.

Understand condition and history before the journey

Ask which service records, MOT information and preparation details accompany the car. Discuss visible wear, cosmetic marks and anything you want checked. A well-framed question about a particular panel or interior feature is more useful than asking whether a used car is “perfect”. The answer should relate to the individual vehicle and its age and mileage.

Read the service-history and MOT guide before comparing records. If an independent inspection would help your decision, agree the arrangements before assuming access is available. The seller should know what you need to establish before a collection or delivery date is set.

Agree the full price and delivery arrangements

Ask for the total purchase figures in writing, including any delivery or optional services. Provide the destination so the team can confirm the route, charge and availability. An estimate on a webpage is not the same as a confirmed order-specific delivery quotation. Clarify who will contact you, the proposed timing and the handover process.

If part exchanging, disclose the current car’s condition accurately and establish how inspection and any finance settlement will be handled. If finance is involved, complete the agreed approval and documentation steps before assuming delivery can proceed. Nationwide Motor Co is a credit broker, not a lender; finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval.

Read reservation and cancellation terms before paying

Ask whether a payment reserves the car, for how long, and on what refund conditions. An enquiry is not a reservation and a preferred delivery date is not a confirmed appointment. Keep the terms supplied for your transaction and ask about anything unclear before making a payment.

Cancellation rights depend on how the contract is made and the applicable circumstances. Do not assume that every dealership purchase has an identical cooling-off period or that a generic statement replaces the terms and rights applying to you. Obtain the relevant information before concluding the purchase; seek independent advice if you need legal interpretation.

Make collection or delivery orderly

Agree which identification and payment confirmation are required through the dealership’s proper process. Arrange insurance and any other responsibilities for taking possession. At handover, compare the car and supplied items with what was agreed, read the documents and ask for the contact route if a question arises afterwards.

Keep copies of the advert, order, agreed work, invoice and warranty information. Do not put sensitive documents in public messages. If a contact or bank-detail change arrives unexpectedly, verify it through an established business number before acting.

Common questions

Can I buy without travelling to Oldham first?

Discuss the available arrangements with the team. Confirm the vehicle information, purchase terms and delivery arrangements before deciding.

Is delivery automatically included?

Ask for the charge applying to your destination and order. Do not infer it from a previous customer's journey.

Does asking about a car hold it for me?

No. Any reservation must be separately agreed, including its terms.

Read the dealership’s delivery information.
