Used Car Buying Checklist

Before buying a used car, check its identity, history, condition and purchase arrangements. Use this practical checklist to compare vehicles consistently and write down questions for the dealership. It is a viewing aid, not a mechanical inspection or a substitute for independent advice where needed.

1. Before viewing: identity and documents

• Save the advert and note the registration, make, model, derivative, price and mileage.
• Ask which service records and invoices are available, how many keys are included and whether important work is documented.
• Use the official GOV.UK MOT history service to review recorded tests, mileage and the next due date. Discuss entries you do not understand with the seller.
• Confirm availability before travelling and ask about the exact equipment that matters to you, such as seating, transmission or parking assistance.
• Obtain an insurance quotation and consider servicing, tyres and fuel as well as the advertised purchase price.

2. At the car: condition and specification

Check that the vehicle matches the advert and available documents. Look around the bodywork, glass, wheels and tyres in suitable light. Examine the interior and try the controls you will use regularly. Ask about visible damage, warning indicators or missing equipment rather than making assumptions.

3. During an agreed test drive

4. Before purchase and collection

• Confirm the vehicle identity, current mileage, agreed price and included items on the order documents.
• Ask for any agreed preparation or work to be recorded clearly, including when it will be completed.
• Read the warranty information and confirm the terms applying to the particular car.
• If part exchanging, confirm the agreed valuation and conditions for your existing vehicle.
