Nationwide Motor Co buying guides · Reviewed 24 September 2026
A useful part-exchange discussion starts with accurate information about your current car and a clear view of the vehicle you want next. Supply the details once, disclose relevant condition issues and keep the valuation separate from any finance settlement. That makes it easier to compare the complete deal.
Gather the essential vehicle information
Have the registration, current mileage, make, model and gearbox ready. Explain the car’s condition honestly, including damage, warning lights, mechanical concerns or modifications. A valuation based on incomplete details may need to change when the car is inspected, which can delay a planned purchase.
Describe the available service records, keys and ownership documents. Avoid sending photographs containing unnecessary personal information. The dealership can explain which documents it needs and how they should be supplied. A clear description is more useful than a list of generic features copied from another car’s advert.
Use photographs that answer real questions
If the team requests photographs, take clear exterior views, interior views and close-ups of relevant wear or damage. Good light and an uncluttered background help someone understand condition. Do not use filters to hide marks or omit an issue that would affect inspection.
A short explanation beside a photograph is useful: where the mark is, whether a warning appears regularly, or which key or accessory is missing. The purpose is an accurate assessment, not a competition to make the car appear new. Keep the original photographs in case the team asks about a particular detail.
Check outstanding finance separately
If finance remains on your current car, obtain a current settlement figure from the finance provider and tell the dealership. Do not assume that the number of remaining payments equals the amount needed to settle. Ask how the settlement will be handled and which written confirmation you will receive.
If the settlement exceeds the agreed value, the difference needs a clear discussion. Do not treat it as a hidden cost inside a headline monthly figure. Nationwide Motor Co is a credit broker, not a lender; any new finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. The finance page is a starting point for the application process, not a guarantee of acceptance.
Understand what a valuation depends on
Ask whether the figure is provisional, what inspection is required and how long it is valid. Mileage and condition can change between an online conversation and a handover. Agree what happens if the information differs when the car arrives rather than leaving that discussion until the day of purchase.
A retail asking price seen elsewhere is not necessarily a part-exchange value. Cars advertised at similar prices can differ in mileage, history, condition, preparation and specification. Compare the complete transaction and ask for an explanation of the figures instead of relying on one number in isolation.
Keep the purchase figures clear
Record the replacement vehicle’s cash price, the agreed part-exchange value, any finance settlement, any delivery charge and the amount you will pay or finance. Read the order before signing. If something changes, ask for an updated written breakdown.
Before handover, ask what to bring and when to remove personal belongings. Remember stored addresses, paired phones and other personal information in the car’s systems. Do not remove equipment that forms part of the agreed valuation without discussing it. Arrange the necessary insurance and changeover details for the vehicle you are taking away.
Common questions
Can I request a valuation before choosing my next car?
Yes. Explain whether you are still browsing and provide accurate current details.
Is an online figure always final?
Not necessarily. Confirm whether it is subject to inspection and how long it remains valid.
Should I hide a fault because it reduces the value?
No. Disclose it so the team can assess the car accurately and avoid surprises later.
Can I part exchange a car with finance outstanding?
Discuss it with the team and supply a current settlement figure. The arrangements depend on the particular agreement and transaction.
