Nationwide Motor Co buying guides · Reviewed 24 September 2026
The most useful used-car budget includes both the amount needed to buy the car and the cost of keeping it on the road. Start with a comfortable total, keep room for running costs, and compare individual cars rather than assuming that a lower advertised price always means a cheaper car to own.
Separate the purchase from the monthly running costs
Write down the money available for the purchase without using funds needed for household bills or an emergency reserve. Then list insurance, vehicle tax, fuel or charging, parking, servicing, tyres and any finance payment. Some costs arrive annually rather than monthly, so set money aside for them. A budget that uses every spare pound for a repayment leaves little flexibility when a tyre or insurance renewal is due.
Obtain an insurance quotation for the exact vehicle before committing. Similar-looking models can produce different quotations. Check current vehicle-tax information rather than assuming the amount paid by a previous keeper carries across to your purchase. Your normal mileage and journey type should inform the fuel budget; a headline laboratory economy figure is not a personal running-cost guarantee.
Choose the car around the job it needs to do
Make two lists: essentials and preferences. Essentials might include room for specific child seats, an automatic gearbox, a particular load opening or a manageable parking footprint. Preferences might include a colour, wheel design or upgraded audio. This distinction makes it easier to compare stock honestly instead of paying for a specification that does not solve your everyday needs.
A smaller hatchback and a large performance SUV have different ownership costs even if a finance illustration looks affordable for both. Check tyre sizes, likely insurance and maintenance requirements. Do not assume that a larger car necessarily offers more useful boot space with every seat occupied. If carrying equipment matters, bring its dimensions to the viewing.
Compare finance on more than the monthly payment
If considering finance, ask for the deposit, amount of credit, term, APR, payment schedule, any final payment or fees, and total amount payable. A smaller monthly figure may reflect a longer term or a different agreement structure. Check what must happen at the end of the agreement and whether the illustration is a quotation for you or only an example.
Nationwide Motor Co is a credit broker, not a lender. Finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. The appropriate agreement and rate depend on the offer made to you; do not treat a website illustration as acceptance. Read the information supplied and ask about commission before deciding. For independent background, see MoneyHelper’s car-finance guide.
Allow for a realistic part-exchange figure
If your current car is part of the purchase, supply its registration, mileage, condition, service information and any outstanding finance. Ask how long a valuation remains valid and what inspection it depends on. Keep the replacement-car price, part-exchange value, settlement figure and resulting balance separate so you can understand the transaction.
Do not budget using the highest figure seen on another advert as though it were an agreed trade value. Retail asking prices and part-exchange valuations serve different purposes. If finance remains on your car, obtain an up-to-date settlement figure and discuss the process before assuming there is money available for the next deposit.
A practical comparison to bring to the showroom
For each shortlisted car record its current asking price, actual mileage, engine, gearbox and essential equipment. Add the insurance quotation, your estimated running costs and any purchase or delivery charges. Put outstanding questions alongside it: a missing service document, an optional feature to confirm or a warranty term to read. This turns a viewing into a decision-making appointment rather than another round of browsing.
Common questions
Should I choose only by a maximum monthly payment?
No. Use it as one affordability check alongside the deposit, term, total amount payable and running costs. The cheapest monthly figure is not automatically the lowest total cost.
Does a warranty remove the need for a repair budget?
No. Warranties have terms, exclusions and limits, and routine maintenance or wear may not be covered. Read the policy and keep a sensible contingency.
Can I ask about a car before applying for finance?
Yes. Contact the team to discuss availability, specification, history and your next step. An application is not required just to ask a question.
